The Gathering
Free-Improv Open Music Sessions

The Gathering is a floating population of improvisers in various media but mostly music.

Gatherings are unstructured and non-conceptual, about collective interplay rather than jamming, although in practice it is open to go anywhere, depending on who with what influences are actually present at the time, ever changing anyway.

As The Gathering was founded 24 years ago by Maggie Nicols, dancer and vocalising performer extraordinaire. We welcome vocalists, dancers and players of any instrument. We also enjoy the presence of visual and spontaneous performance artists.

Everyone is welcome and admission is free (donation only).
Hope you'll join us soon.

BitterSuite
by the People Pile

This night is our first pilot of BitterSuite, it is a culmination of three days of workshop and experimentation with The People Pile. Come a long for a night of pla ! How can certain colours change the way you hear music? What can a smell tell you about the music?

BitterSuite is inspired by synesthsia - exploring how to create sensory environments inspired by classical music. How can smells, textures, tastes enhance your experience of music? And why?

Motivated by the ways we listen to and use classical music - from Classic FM's "relaxing classics" to youth deterrents in tube stations and outside shops. BitterSuite is inspired to create environments that inspire audiences, especially young people, to actively listen to and engage with classical music.

And as the first night of this idea - we would love you to come along and tell us what you think!

"While poverty persists there is no true freedom. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.

"And overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. Massive-poverty and obscene inequality are such terrible scourges of our times - times in which the world boasts breathtaking advances in science, technology, industry and wealth accumulation - but they rank alongside slavery and apartheid as social evils."
NELSON MANDELA

The Albert school

The Albert School on Sundays emerged from a longstanding and fruitful collaboration between a qualified teacher of science and mathematics, and a professional artis, both based in London. The school comes as a platform where one could project and instil in young people ideals of humanity and education, where skilfulness is passed on from teacher to pupils as a trait of enrichment, where knowledge is conveyed for the fulfilment of their personality.

The one hour long sessions cover the key topics of the National Curriculum for KS4 (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, IGCSE) & KS5 Physics and Maths.

Drop in for one or several of our unique GCSE Maths and Science Classes.

Movement and Body Awareness Workshops For the Over 60s

These is a free series of four workshops that aimed at the over 60s but anyone interested is welcome to come along. The intention is to create an awareness and understanding of how our bodies function through simple and gentle exercises, where everyone is free to do as much or as little as they can. Aging changes our relationship with our bodies and it often starts to become problematic as years of wear and tear leave their marks. We will try and look at the body from a new angle and hopefully discover a joy in movement and a respect for our bodies and what they can do.

The workshops will take place in the sports hall at the Albert, a new community centre at 5 Albert road. All sessions will run from 11am to 2pm with a 45 minute break. Food, snacks and hot drinks are available from the Albert Café or feel free to bring your own. Comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement are recommended.

3. Thursday 4thApril
Sounds and Rhythms of the Body
We will listen to the sounds our body makes when still and in everyday movements. We will also look at what other kind of sounds we could make and explore the significance of rhythm and repetition.

4. Thursday 11th April
The Body Interacting With Objects
With simple props we will be looking at how we can extend or change the capabilities of our bodies.
